Mobile Website testing

Mobile Website is not a mobile application, here mobile website means a responsive mobile version of any cloud base application. It is totally different than mobile application testing. Let me first explain the difference between the mobile application and mobile website, mobile application is something which user needs to install in his mobile and that should be platform dependent, means if user has iphone then user needs to install iPhone version of application same with the android, but Mobile Website is something different than Mobile application, here user just need to open the browser and enter URL of the site. Which is also not dependent on the platform. Means user can access the mobile website irrespective of their mobile, whether its iPhone or android or any other phones as long as it support the browser and internet functionality, it can access the mobile website.

When we open Facebook in browser and when we open the Facebook in mobile browser, then you can see the same site but in mobile, it looks entirely different than in pc or laptop, another example are LinkedIn, google and  many more.

Some of you might have one question, why do we need the mobile website when we have desktop website which looks great on pc/ laptop, the reason is accessibility, it would be hard for user to access the desktop site in mobile, because the screen size is small in mobile when we open the desktop site in mobile then it would not be visible properly. We need specific mobile website.

To test the mobile website the approach is slightly different than desktop website testing but not all different. Firstly we need to make test plan where we need to fix our scope. Scope includes like following points.

  • Mobile Phones: on which mobile phones we are going to test this application. Like android, iPhone or windows. This also depends on client requirements and production Environment.
  • Browsers: we know that there are number of browsers present in app store. However we need to Fix the scope for browsers. Basically we look for two type of browser which support the flash, java script and other who are lite browser which does not support java script and flashes. Such a browsers need to be consider while for testing.
  • Screen Size: screen sizes need to be chosen carefully, this depends on pixels also like a 5 inch with qHD display, 5 inch with HD display, 5 inch with full HD display. Higher HD means higher the pixel in screen which result in different size of object.
  • Network: network like 2g,3g,4g or wifi etc. has to consider while deciding the scope of the application. This is gives us the response time on each network.
  • Accessibility options: this is what not all the application have but one can provide application with accessibility option to increase the front size, to increase the button size so that user with less eye sight can use this feature.

Remaining thing is same as we do while testing the desktop site. Like creating the scenarios, test cases, executing them on the application all are same.
